The name Raphael Holzhauser may mean absolutely nothing to Newcastle United fans, but it’s one that many in Europe are starting to take notice of.
That’s because the Austria international, currently at Beerschot in the Jupiler Pro League, is putting up rather incredible numbers this season.
The 27-year-old, who spent three months or so without a club in the summer of 2019 after walking away from Grasshopper Zürich, currently boasts nine goals and eight assists in 12 league appearances this season, which has caused scouts to prick their ears up.
Newcastle are among those, according to Jeunes Footeux in France, where they are also joined by Hertha BSC in Germany.
The website claim the Magpies are following the Austrian’s performances ‘attentively’, fully aware the attacking midfielder’s contract is currently set to run out next summer.
This means that should he choose not to renew with the Belgian side, he could find himself available for a free transfer in the coming months, which would be a welcome bonus for Steve Bruce’s side.
However, Jeunes Footeux make it clear there are currently talks ongoing to renew the player’s contract, so we’ll have to wait and see if they are fruitful or not.
