Once hailed as one of the more promising wingers in French football, Gabriel Obertan’s career didn’t quite go to plan after a move to Manchester United ended up stifling any progress he could have had.

Rarely playing for the Red Devils, the former Bordeaux starlet then transferred to Newcastle where things didn’t go much better, causing the player to cut his deal with the club short in a bid to become a free agent.

Now 27, whoever gambles on the winger will be taking a strong leap of faith, not only because of the doubts over his quality, but also over his match fitness, after Obertan only made 6 small appearances for Newcastle last season.

This is why when La Gazette des Transferts claim that smaller French teams such as Dijon, Metz or even Bastia were interested in him, it didn’t come as a surprise.

Likely to be desperate to once again prove himself, we doubt the player will end up being too picky about his next club, probably taking whatever he’s given wage wise.

It’s sad when player don’t fulfil their potential, but perhaps the chance to display his ability on a smaller stage is exactly what the winger needs right now.
