Here’s a transfer story which seems to be finished before it really got started, just like so many rumours around Newcastle United lately.
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo writes that several English clubs have been interested in Benfica goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos.
Many have been impressed with his recent performances, and made contact to find out more information on a possible transfer.
Newcastle United were apparently one of them, but the newspaper isn’t very confident that the Magpies will be able to carry on with their chase.
The report points out that the bid for the club’s takeover has been withdrawn, and the Magpies were counting on that new budget for this move.
Now everything at St. James’ Park is being reconsidered, and that’s why Newcastle have ‘backed off’ from this pursuit.
Even though Vlachodimos may not be recognised as a big star, the fact he’s a regular starter for Benfica should make him an expensive player. Newcastle should still have the ability to go after him, but the Saudi takeover would’ve definitely made things easier.
