Originally a defensive midfielder, Vurnon Anita is now better known as a right-back, having played there more often than not at Newcastle United.
The 28-year-old signed at St James’ Park back in 2012, and, with his contract running out in the summer, seems likely to leave in the upcoming transfer window on a free.
Newcastle’s apparent refusal to hand him a new contract means the world is now his oyster and, with more than a few clubs likely to be interested in his versatile services, a move to Serie A could be on the cards.
According to Il Mattino in Italy, Napoli have taken a sudden interest in the three time Netherlands international as they look to bolster their defence for the upcoming season.
Likely to end up third in the Italian league, Aurelio De Laurentiis’ club want to try and mount a title challenge next season, as well as repeat this year’s feats in the Champions League if possible.
The opportunity to be a part of that could be very attractive to the departing Newcastle defender, even if he is likely to play a backup role to Elseid Hysaj for that right-back position.
Nevertheless, it’s something to consider for a player who, despite making 27 appearances under Rafa Benitez last season, doesn’t appear to have his club’s full trust as they prepare for a new season, this time in the Premier League.
