Newcastle United have emerged as one of the contenders for AC Milan star Rafael Leão, according to claims from Italy.

Operating on the left wing, he has managed 13 goals and seven assists from 38 matches in all competitions this season.

The Portugal international can also play up front or used as a second striker.

La Repubblica now state there are several European clubs interested in the 22-year-old, including Newcastle United.

It’s claimed the ‘most decisive courtship’ the attacker’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has received is from the Magpies and Paris Saint-Germain.

The player earns €1.5m per year in his current deal that runs down in 2024, and the Serie A side’s ‘ceiling’ for the renewal is €4m per season plus bonuses.

However, the ‘crux’ is the offer from the Premier League or the Ligue 1 winners, worth around €6m per year.

In other words, the Magpies and PSG would be willing to quadruple the Portuguese forward’s wages to join them.

Bahrain’s Investcorp are in the process of buying the Italian club. If they end up becoming Milan’s new owners, then it needs to be seen whether or not the club’s new leadership would be willing to offer a better deal to Leão.

While the ‘most decisive courtship’ Mendes has received is from Newcastle United and PSG, time should tell whether or not Eddie Howe’s side or others could turn this desire to sign the player into an offer to take Leão away from Milan.
