Newcastle United have a €11-12m proposal ready to go for striker Edinson Cavani, should their takeover by a Saudi Arabian investment firm be finalised.
The Magpies are in the midst of a takeover by the group, with their bid currently under scrutiny by the Premier League.
Should it be ratified, which is a big if, at this moment in time, they would instantly become the richest club in the division.
As a result, a considerable summer spend has been mooted, with reports claiming the new owners are determined to invest in not only the playing squad but the club and region as a whole.
Naturally, a whole host of big-name signings have been linked with a switch to St James Park, the belief being that the Magpies new owners want to make waves early doors with high profile captures.
Cavani is one of the names to have been linked as he’s set to leave Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain this summer when his contract comes to an end.
He’s been linked with clubs around Europe, who all view the 33-year-old as a smart investment given his goalscoring record.
Newcastle are one of them, according to journalist Alfredo Pedullà, and have a huge wage proposal ready to go should their takeover be completed.
“Cavani? Newcastle, should the change of ownership take place, have an €11-12 million proposal ready,” he told Sportitalia, relayed by FC Inter 1908.
“See if he wants to go to a club that doesn’t play the Champions League.”
That lack of European football is certainly likely to be the kicker should Newcastle make their move this summer. There are sure to be several Champions League clubs keen on Cavani, and that is always a big draw for any player.
At 33, though, perhaps he will think now is the time to focus on the money, something Newcastle will undoubtedly be able to offer if claims such as these are genuine.
