Newcastle United think they’ve ‘got a bit of a chance’ at signing Timo Werner from Chelsea in January, more so than Dusan Vlahovic.

That’s according to journalist Christian Falk, who says links with Werner’s agents give the Magpies a chance of getting the German striker.

Newcastle are likely to be big spenders in the January transfer window, with Financial Fair Play not likely to be an issue for them.

Eddie Howe’s side could do with an overhaul, and while the defence is likely to be a priority, adding extra firepower to take the pressure off of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin would also be welcome.

Werner has already been linked over the last few months, with him somewhat out of favour under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea after the arrival of Romelu Lukaku in the summer.

While he has still been a regular in the side, he is yet to really justify his place or the big price the Blues paid for him.

That could lead to an early exit, and Falk says Newcastle believe they’ve got a chance of making a transfer happen.

“Newcastle would also like Vlahovic, but he is young and needs sporting success now, so whether he would go to Newcastle isn’t clear,” he told BILD.

“That’s maybe one for next year if they stay in the Premier League. All the money helps them.

“With Werner, they reckon they’ve got a bit of a chance. They’ve got contacts with the management. One of their players (Fabian Schar) is also managed by the German agency that represents Werner.

“Whether Werner will end up feeling so frustrated at Chelsea and then say ‘I’ll give it a go in Newcastle’ is the big question.”
