Joining Liverpool over the summer, Xherdan Shaqiri finally put an end to his difficult Stoke spell after the Potters were relegated to the Championship last season.

Triggering a £13m or so clause in his contract, the Reds have benefitted from adding the Swiss to their squad depth, as he’s already scored two goals and picked up two assists inputs 380 minutes of Premier League football this season.

However, he isn’t a regular starter, which he knew would be the case when he signed, and it will be interesting to see how long he can last in this situation, as every 27-year-old footballer would, in the grand scheme of things, prefer to start week in, week out than sit on a bench marvelling at Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport before his side’s clash against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, the Switzerland international was asked about his brief spell at Inter, a club he ‘could never say anything bad about’, still remembering the fans’ welcome when he first arrived.

As for whether he’d be willing to return to Italy one day, he said: “I had great fun in Serie A, and the country is amazing. I’m happy at Liverpool, but you can never say never in football.”

At Anfield for now, Shaqiri is solely focusing on the task at hand, which, as he puts it, is to ‘aim for everything’, meaning the Reds want to win both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Liverpool fans will be glad to know the players are ‘confident’ they can do it, too.
