Steven Bergwijn signed for Tottenham Hotspur in January 2020, moving from PSV in a deal worth around €30m.
Things started off well, with a goal in his first Premier League match, a 2-0 victory over Manchester City.
The following season he made 35 appearances, scoring one goal and adding seven assists. This campaign he’s made 11 appearances, with a single assist. Bergwijn hasn’t been picking up many minutes and the last time he played more than 40 minutes in a Premier League match came in August.
Antonio Conte clearly hasn’t been counting on the 24-year-old as one of his main players, and there’s been talk about a possible exit in the January transfer window.
On the Voetbal Talk show, Freek Jansen said that Ajax will get a quality upgrade if they replace Brazilian David Neres with the Tottenham player.
Fellow pundit Kenneth Perez disagreed, and is quoted by SoccerNews as saying: “Do you really think so? Because he scored for the Oranje squad? He never plays for Tottenham Hotspur, so we can’t judge him.”
Perez will be referring to the recent international break, in which Bergwijn scored a goal and contributed an assist in a 2-0 victory over Norway.
Bergwijn’s contract with Spurs lasts until June 2025.
