Tammy Abraham has insisted he doesn’t have any regrets around leaving Chelsea for AS Roma last summer.
The 24-year-old came up through the ranks of the west London club’s youth system before making his way into their first team in 2016. He found it hard to enjoy game time and was sent out on loan to Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa.
Abraham was given an opportunity at Chelsea for two years between 2019 and 2021, before Thomas Tuchel sanctioned his sale to the Serie A side.
In his debut season in Italy, the 24-year-old scored 27 goals and registered five assists, and was a vital part of the Giallorossi’s UEFA Conference League winning side.
Roma face Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly in Israel on Saturday and the clash will see the England international come up against his former manager, Antonio Conte. Despite not playing under the Italian at Chelsea, the striker had good things to say about him.
“When he [Conte] arrived at Chelsea, I was lucky enough to train with him during the summer preparations. Then I went to play on loan [Bristol] but I had time to appreciate it. He is a good man and a good coach: after all, the numbers speak for him,” Abraham told Corriere dello Sport.
Towards the end of the interview, Abraham was asked about the possibility of returning to the Premier League and especially to Chelsea, who have a €80m buyback clause.
“No. The first day I arrived at Roma I felt at home. I’m in no hurry to get back to the Premier League because I can express my way of playing here. In Italy I feel happy in every respect,” he explained.
Regarding the Blues’ buyback clause, Abraham stressed: “Believe me: I am not thinking of the future, but of the present. I focus exclusively on the season that is about to begin, because I want it to be even more rewarding than the first I experienced in Italy.”
The player was asked whether he regrets leaving Chelsea.
Responding to that, Abraham said: “Never, not even for a second. Choosing Roma was one of the right decisions I have made in my life.”
