Following Newcastle United’s takeover, led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the Magpies have been linked to several players.
Real Betis star Nabil Fekir is among them. Last weekend, we carried a report from Estadio Deportivo, who explained the La Liga side ‘fear’ the Tyneside club could return for the ‘franchise player’ after trying to sign him in the past.
Betis TV, the official channel of the Spanish club, has interviewed the 28-year-old. Estadio Deportivo have relayed his comments and state the Frenchman was specifically quizzed about the recent reports linking him to Newcastle.
“I don’t think about the offers. I am very happy here. I am learning every day and I hope it can continue like this. The fans love me, it gives me a lot of joy and I want to give it back to them on the pitch,” Fekir said.
The comments are very professional from Fekir, both managing to show his appreciation and dedication to his current club, whilst also leaving a little gap of possibility for a future move.
Fekir’s current deal with Real Betis will run down in 2023 and on a potential renewal, he said: “It’s normal that we start talking about an extension because I only have this year left, plus another one. Let’s talk and we’ll see.”
Newcastle United, who will have considerable funds to strengthen the squad in the coming windows, will have various options to look at, if they miss out on Fekir. Those renewal talks will likely be key, with Betis not really in the position to offer huge wages.
