According to claims in the Catalan press, Jasper Cillessen moving to Crystal Palace this summer can’t be completely ruled out. Crystal Palace boss Frank de Boer is keen to bring his compatriot to the Premier League club before the deadline, according to an AS report on Friday.
Mundo Deportivo say Cillessen wants to compete with Marc-André ter Stegen for the No.1 jersey, and is happy to be playing for such a prestigious club as Barcelona.
The Catalan newspaper add that even though Cillessen is happy, a move isn’t impossible because ‘you never know’ what can happen in football.
Cillessen joined Barcelona last summer from Ajax, but in his first season at the Camp Nou he’s mainly had to be content with just playing in the Copa del Rey.
The Dutch goalkeeper will feel he’s on a par with Ter Stegen, at least, and so should have a reasonable chance, but Barcelona don’t want to be seen to be wavering with their faith in the German.
Should Cillessen realise he’s on the wrong end of a likely unfair battle then the 28-year-old could find a move like Crystal Palace attractive. The World Cup is on the horizon, and the Dutch goalkeeper position is up for grabs.
