Nabil Fekir won the World Cup with France in July and even before he was on the plane to Russia, he had an opportunity to join Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had agreed a fee with Lyon to secure his signature and they even carried his medical tests at his national team’s training camp in June. Some concerns during the medical saw the Reds try to lower the player’s price tag, which was rejected by the Ligue 1 outfit.
The Merseyside club efforts to renegotiate the transfer fee did not go down well with the French side, who decided to pull the plug on their player’s move to Anfield.
Lyon manager Bruno Génésio has expressed his delight on how Fekir managed to overcome the disappointment after his wish to join the Premier League club did not take shape.
“It is never easy, but he was able to overcome the disappointment of his failed transfer to Liverpool,” Génésio was quoted as saying by L’Equipe.
The France international scored 18 goals and had seven assists in the league last season and Fekir’s manager remains hopeful that he can replicate his previous campaign’s form this term.
“He is at Lyon, his home, where he is a captain of the team that qualified for the Champions League. This season could be a very important for Nabil. I don’t see any attitudes or signs that suggest he won’t live up to his role the way he did last year,” Lyon boss explained.
