Towards the end of Tottenham’s dramatic victory over Ajax on Wednesday evening, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar could be seen getting ready to celebrate on the bench.
He was hugging teammates and generally preparing to go wild and party.
Then Lucas Moura happened.
The Brazilian’s injury time goal, his third of the match, snatched the Champions League final away from Ajax and put it in the hands of Tottenham.
As Spurs went wild and Mauricio Pochettino struggled to keep his emotions together, Huntelaar must have felt more than sick.
Netherlands website Soccer News quote commentator Jeroen Elshoff speaking to a Dutch podcast today, and he revealed an incident just after the match: “After the 2-1, I have thought all the time: don’t let it happen again.
“Exactly the same (as in 2005): crying men, completely understandable emotions. I have seen Huntelaar throw a water bottle at the referee, I think that hasn’t even been on TV.
“I think he felt that too much injury time was added to that injury time, which was wrong, by the way: André Onana did that himself by stretching time in injury time.”
Soccer News say it’s ‘unclear’ whether Huntelaar will face punishment for what happened.
The striker may have expected to start the match against Tottenham, after David Neres was injured, but Kasper Dolberg was chosen instead.
