Brought in to save Everton from relegation, Sam Allardyce has done his job. There’s no denying that.
However, whether he’s the manager to take the club forward and help them fight for European football, where they feel they should be, is a whole different kettle of fish.
That’s why, even when the Toffees were performing under the one-time England manager, rumours of talks with other coaches were rife, with Shakhtar’s Paulo Fonseca among the list.
Unfortunately for Everton fans, it appears the Portuguese manager doesn’t currently appear to have a move back to Western Europe in mind just yet, as he explained to the press after his team’s loss against Dynamo Kiev.
Asked whether he had decided to extend his stay, he said, relayed by the club’s official site: “There’s no deadline or fixed date. Negotiations are underway”.
With his current deal expiring at the end of the season and Shakhtar performing well in Europe, it’s only normal for the 45-year-old to be a wanted man on the managerial market.
However, you don’t negotiate a new deal with your current club if the desire to stay isn’t there.
Someone might come along and trump the Ukrainian side, and that could very well be Everton, but if they don’t make a move, they’ll never find out.
