The Danish media pushing Christian Eriksen to Barcelona is getting a little silly now. Or sillier.
With pretty much no basis to ask, other than their own continual ideas that Eriksen should go there, Ekstra Bladet this week pressed the Tottenham player about a Barcelona switch: “Barcelona are a great club and I don’t think there are many who say no to Barcelona.”
Eriksen’s comments made their way to Spain, and today’s Mundo Deportivo makes their readers believe the player has sent a come and get me plea. It’s explained that whilst Eriksen isn’t first choice, he’s of some level of interest.
Of course, Mundo Deportivo using the Danish quotes to link Eriksen to Barca is now news in Denmark.
So much so that the national manager has been asked about it. No, really.
Danish newspaper BT quote Åge Hareide as saying: “I think it’s strange he’s not first choice. Christian is not just a Barcelona type player – he is a fantastic footballer. And with even better players around him, he will only be even better. I am completely convinced. More and smarter players around him will benefit a player like Christian, who is so gifted with the ball at his feet.
“He also has a high level at Tottenham, where he knows what he must do. So it’s hard.”
That, clearly, wasn’t enough, and Hareide was asked what he’d say if Eriksen came to him and said he’d received an offer from Barcelona: “Christian has got so much experience that he need not ask me.”
It’s worth reiterating here that it’s the Danish media pushing all of this, with the Spanish press giving it very little coverage in comparison, and there being no suggestion of Barcelona actually making a move.
Denmark must be quiet this week.
