Liverpool enjoyed a good start to the 2019/20 season after winning the first five matches in the league and overcoming Chelsea to win the UEFA Super Cup last month.
Their unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end when they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Napoli on Tuesday. The scoreline was 0-0 for the majority of the game before Dries Mertens gave his side the lead after converting from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side were awarded a penalty after Andy Robertson fouled José Callejón and the referee’s decision wasn’t appreciated by Jürgen Klopp after the match.
Apart from the disappointing result, the Champions League winners also faced issues outside the pitch during their trip to Italy.
Napoli’s home stadium Stadio San Paolo is divided into several sections and one of them is named Tribuna Posillipo, where a few Liverpool young players were seated during the game.
CalcioNapoli24 claims these players made a ‘bad gesture’ by keeping their legs on the new seats installed in Tribuna Posillipo and this caught the attention of stewards.
The outlet covering the Serie A side have caught hold of the image and they state: ‘Only after repeat insistence to the players (from stewards) to observe a more appropriate and respectful attitude, the situation returned to normal.’
Clearly, the Napoli media are unhappy with this ‘bad gesture’ made by Liverpool players.
This is Napoli, a club known for a ferocious atmosphere and attacks on travelling fans off the pitch… are feet on seats in a football stadium really a big deal?
