Last week, Manchester United confirmed they have appointed Ajax coach Erik ten Hag as their new manager.

The Red Devils have already been linked to a handful of Ajax players and also those who have played under the 52-year-old in the past. Frenkie de Jong is one who falls into the latter category.

Two days ago, Sport explained that ‘there will be an offer’ from Manchester United for the Barcelona midfielder.

The same newspaper on Sunday brought a fresh update on the 24-year-old’s future. Another report from Sport explains Ten Hag is the coach who knew how to get the best of the player.

Manchester United, for their part, have ‘always been very interested’ in the Netherlands international and could ‘consider hiring him’. Ten Hag’s appointment ‘increases the option’ of De Jong’s arrival at Old Trafford in the next window.

Sport state Xavier Hernández’s side will wait to finish the season to ‘see how the market develops’. Barca are aware the Dutchman is one of the players who can help them ‘get more money’ in case they need it.

Manchester United’s interest in De Jong was also discussed by journalist Oriol Domènech on Catalunya Ràdio.

According to Domènech, the incoming United manager has a ‘great relationship’ with his compatriot and ‘wants’ him for his new project at Old Trafford.

Domènech further explains Barca have put the Dutchman’s name on the table, ‘in various meetings’ with European clubs. They believe De Jong is a player who can help them ‘make a significant financial return, around €70m’.

“The only option for Frenkie de Jong to leave Barça is to return to the orders of Erik ten Hag and, in addition, to a great team. It is said that Xavi wants him, but if United comes with €70m, Barca will try to convince the player to leave,” Domènech explained.

“Barca need to make a big transfer this season and there aren’t many players for whom you can make a big sale. The only Barca player who can leave a lot of money at the club is Frenkie de Jong.”

Meanwhile, another journalist, Jose Alvarez Haya, has told El Chiringuito that ‘Manchester United want Frenkie de Jong’. He further reported that Barcelona ‘would be happy to sell’ him, if they were to receive an offer of around €70m.

Although De Jong is happy at the Camp Nou, multiple reports have indicated the Premier League side ‘want’ him and Barcelona are ready to cut ties with the Dutchman, if they receive a fee of around €70m.
