That AS Roma need a midfielder is a well-known fact, following their inability to secure a deal for Granit Xhaka from Arsenal, but there’s also another position Jose Mourinho wants reinforced, and that’s at right-back.
Among those being looked at to bolster the roles is Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot, with Calciomercato reporting it on Thursday, and Corriere dello Sport doing the same on Friday.
The newspaper, who use very similar wording to the previous report, explain the move for the Old Trafford player ‘sees the approval of the Special One’, with Tiago Pinto, their technical director, currently ‘studying a strategy’ to be able to sign him from England.
Unable to pay full price for the Portuguese defender, it’s made clear the Serie A club would approach Manchester United ‘with the formula of the loan with the right of redemption’.
Should this deal take place, it would be Dalot’s second stint in Italy in two seasons, having spent the entirety of the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Milan, who even tried to sign him permanently but were never able to secure a deal with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
We’ll have to wait and see if Tiago Pinto has better luck than his rivals, but with the defender hardly playing this season, the desire to get regular game time under a manager who believes in him could certainly force the 22-year-old to push for the move himself.
