Jose Mourinho wanted to take Harry Kane to Roma with him in the summer when the striker made it clear he wanted to leave Tottenham.
That’s according to journalist Ugo Trani, who revealed all behind the efforts made by Mourinho and his new club during a recent appearance on Centro Suono Sport.
Kane was seemingly determined to leave Tottenham in the summer, having decided that his future should lie away from the club.
Manchester City pushed hard for his signature as they looked for the long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero, but ultimately a move never happened, with Manchester City and Tottenham unable to reach an agreement on a transfer fee.
His future at the club remains in doubt, particularly as by next summer, he will be in the final two years of his current Tottenham contract.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester City will come calling again or if the opportunity has now passed.
It seems, though, a move to the Etihad wasn’t the only possible one that could have happened as former Tottenham manager Mourinho was keen on reuniting with Kane at his new club.
“Was Shomurodov a request from Mourinho? I don’t believe it even if I see it…” Sport Evai report Trani saying.
“Mourinho wanted Kane, and he gets Shomurodov? The Friedkins can buy such players, but the truth is they don’t want to buy them, which is quite different.
“In my opinion, they have the money, but they don’t want to invest it. Mourinho indicated this name because he knew that there was a controversy at Tottenham, with the player who wanted to leave.
“The operation was written: Vlahovic to Tottenham and Kane to City. Mourinho, who came from Tottenham, knew that the club did not want to give him to City, that Kane wanted to leave at all costs and that there was the European Championship.
“And he said ‘if you can make an operation it is better to take Kane who is an extraordinary player’ but they didn’t take him. But they didn’t go from Kane to Shomurodov.
“Throughout the summer, I have heard that negotiations were done by the agents. It’s the agents who go to Pinto, that’s how the market is done. They told me about embarrassing negotiations.”
