AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho has called Nemanja Matic about a reunion when the midfielder leaves Manchester United this summer.
That’s according to Corriere dello Sport, who say the Serbian ‘could be a valuable reinforcement’ for the Italian side, and Mourinho ‘wants him’.
They explain that the Portuguese boss wants to build a competitive side for next season, and the club plans to grant his wishes, even if they don’t win the Conference League.
Improvement is needed in all areas, and Matic is the man that Mourinho is targeting to improve midfield.
He will be the key to getting Matic, a man who he managed during his time at Manchester United and Chelsea.
The Roma boss wants to add a director to his midfield, and Matic would fit the bill, so Mourinho plans to talk to him and ‘involve him in the Roma project’.
Key to the move will be the fact he’s available on a free as he has an agreement with Manchester United to terminate his contract a year early.
Roma believe he would help the squad to grow in ‘quality and personality’, but they will have to find an agreement on a contract as Matic will want the last major deal of his career.
He is happy to reduce the €7m he currently earns, but to how much remains to be seen, particularly with a signing bonus likely to be a part of the overall package.
