Sevilla director of football Monchi is making a €3m+ sacrifice to secure his move to Aston Villa and reunite with Unai Emery.
That’s according to Diario de Sevilla, who say that a move is all but confirmed and the Spaniard will be heading to Villa Park.
The newspaper reports that Sevilla and Monchi will ‘part ways for good’ after a falling out between him and the club’s hierarchy that has led to a week of discussions over his future.
He is keen to move to Aston Villa and reunite with former manager Emery but has seen that blocked by Sevilla, who have demanded his release clause be paid in full.
That led to executives from Aston Villa to travel to Andalucía to negotiate, with them and ‘lawyers’ needed to intervene in the matter.
They’ve now agreed to pay his €3.1m release clause to get him out but the figure will actually be ‘cut into’ Monchi’s salary over the four years he will sign at Villa Park. In other words, Aston Villa will pay the sum and Monchi has agreed to a salary sacrifice in order to pay them back.
An agreement for his departure and subsequent move to Birmingham is now only waiting an announcement, with it suggested Sevilla may be waiting to do that and reveal his replacement in one fell swoop.
