With the potential departure of Ilkay Gündogan, Manchester City have been moving quickly to try and find a replacement.

For a while now, the lead has been Mateo Kovacic, and following news on Tuesday that a deal was close, Gianluca Di Marzio brings some good news for the Etihad faithful.

Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with a potential Gündogan renewal, but it is about the signing of the Croatian midfielder.

The Italian journalist explains that the 29-year-old ‘has signed’ his contract with Manchester City, meaning the transfer is on the verge of being completed.

Previous reports stated a fee of around €30m would be heading to London, and while Di Marzio doesn’t provide these details in his brief update, he does add that the ‘official announcement is coming’.

Signed from Real Madrid back in 2019 after an initial loan, Kovacic has made 142 Premier League appearances in his career, scoring four goals and assisting another 13, meaning he will bring a wealth of experience to Pep Guardiola’s midfield should he indeed end up replacing Gündogan.
