FC Mainz midfielder Anton Stach has hailed Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan following his recent call-up to the Germany squad.
Stach was a surprise inclusion in Hansi Flick’s squad for this international break, the first time he has been a part of the national set-up.
It saw the midfielder making his international debut, earning a 28-minute appearance in the 2-0 win over Israel before sitting n the bench for the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.
His call up and subsequent playing time saw him rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in world football, with the Germany squad boasting names such as Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Kai Havertz and Ilkay Gundogan, among others.
The Manchester City man is a key player for club and country, having racked up 56 games for his national team since making his debut under Joachim Low in October 2011.
And when asked which new teammate impressed him the most, Stach put the Manchester City star at the top of the list.
“That’s a difficult question! There was so much quality on the pitch,” he told Sport 1.
“Personally, I thought Ilkay Gündogan was very cool; you can learn a lot from a player like that. His anticipation and security on the ball were really outstanding.
“But I also have to mention Jamal Musiala. You all saw what he can do against Holland. That was impressive. I was able to take a lot away from that. But as I said, I was generally impressed by the quality in training.”
