When Cristhian Stuani moved from Espanyol to Middlesbrough there was quite some surprise in both Spain and Uruguay. Why would a player, an international, leave La Liga to go and play in England’s Championship?
There was of course the chance that Middlesbrough would quickly get promoted, but Stuani didn’t have that guarantee and it was a gamble for the footballer.
The gamble paid off and Stuani helped Middlesbrough get promoted in his first season with the club, and now Aitor Karanka’s men are establishing themselves in the Premier League.
However, Stuani still has a plan to play again at Espanyol, according to Spanish newspaper Marca. They say the striker has made no secret of his wish to return to the Barcelona club at some point.
Espanyol face Real Madrid on Sunday and Marca have spoken to Stuani ahead of the big match. He wished his former club all the best, and clearly hopes they’ll win what can often be a game full of battles.
On potentially moving back to Espanyol, Marca quote Stuani as saying: “The door is open. Espanyol is my club but now I’m focused on the Premier League.”
