Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard has said he has a decision to make on his future after this season.
In their Wednesday edition, Ekstra Bladet have published an interview with the 29-year-old, where he opened the door to leaving Brentford in the summer.
“I just turned 29, I’m at my highest level of play. If I have to make a shift, maybe it’ll happen this summer. On the other hand, I don’t think Brentford are interested in selling me now,” he said.
The Denmark international has a contract until 2025 and the Bees have an option to further extend it by 12 months. The defensive midfielder will be at the Premier League side until he’s 32-years-of-age, if they extend his deal until 2026.
He has also not ruled out the possibility of committing his future to Brentford beyond 2026.
“Of course, it could also be that I have to make an even longer agreement with Brentford and retire from here,” Nørgaard explained.
Brentford could see goalkeeper David Raya and striker Ivan Toney move elsewhere after this season. The Spaniard has a deal until 2024 and Thomas Frank has already confirmed he’s turned down renewal offers.
The possibility of Brentford losing Raya and Toney in the summer doesn’t seem to bother Nørgaard, mainly because of the Premier League side’s recruitment model.
“I’m not too worried, right, if we lose a profile or two. Brentford have always been very good at bringing in competent replacements when we have lost players,” he stressed.
Brentford are eighth in the table with 42 points, trailing fifth placed Newcastle United by five points. Nørgaard believes qualifying for European competition next season will be a huge success.
“I hope we can sneak into Europe. Relegation is completely out of the picture, and therefore we must fight for a European ticket. It will be very big for us if we succeed,” the midfielder concluded.
