A 4-1 defeat at the hands of Ajax meant Real Madrid were knocked out of the Champions League, a competition which they won for three seasons in a row.
Zinedine Zidane was in charge of Los Blancos as he guided the Spanish capital club to three back-to-back success in the European competition. The Frenchman left the club last summer and was replaced by Julen Lopetegui, who was then sacked in October.
Santiago Solari was appointed as the former Spain manager’s successor and under his guidance, the La Liga giants were knocked out of two competitions – Copa del Rey and the Champions League – in a week.
Wednesday’s edition of Mundo Deportivo claims Solari’s future at the club beyond this season remains uncertain and Mauricio Pochettino of Tottenham Hotspur has emerged as a candidate for Real Madrid.
The former Southampton manager was approached to become Zidane’s successor, but it was not easy for the 13-time European champions to land him since he had signed a long-term contract with the north London club just days before Zidane announced his decision to step down.
Mundo claims Pochettino has an exit route and if either of Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain come calling, he ‘will not hesitate’ to leave Spurs.
Should the Argentine leave Tottenham, it will be a big blow for the Premier League outfit.
