With Mauricio Pochettino admitting he doesn’t know if Christian Eriksen will play for Tottenham Hotspur again, his quotes are a big topic in the Spanish media today.
Since Real Madrid have been heavily linked to the midfielder, the local press all took manager’s words as a big hint, with outlets even saying he’s now ‘confirmed’ that the Dane star is leaving London.
Now it turns out that Pochettino has also spoken about Eriksen in an interview with ESPN Brasil after the loss to Newcastle United on Sunday.
The manager was asked if he thinks it’s unfair that fans have been using the player’s absence as a reason why Spurs couldn’t create much against the Magpies.
“Whenever you don’t win, the ones who don’t play are the best,” Mauricio Pochettino told ESPN Brasil. “We have to understand that football is like this, we won and lost matches with Christian, and we had players with creativity or not. On and off the pitch, this is understandable. When you don’t win, you always think the solutions are others.”
Pochettino had more to say about Tottenham’s struggle, explaining Newcastle United’s defensive system was something that really stopped the London side from succeeding yesterday.
“We couldn’t break this defensive situation that they put in, with very aggressive defenders and very tight lines. We had some chances, but I don’t think we created every chance we could have made to find better situations to draw or win the game.”
Tottenham now prepare to face Arsenal in the North London derby at the Emirates Stadium next Sunday.
