SPAL are flying high. Never heard of them? That’s understandable, since the club have changed name, gone bankrupt, merged, been reformed and then given birth to the name SPAL again.
A very big part of that, report Italian newspaper Tuttosport on Wednesday, has been former Leeds United player Mirco Antenucci. The striker is referred to as a ‘crack’, what Italians and Spaniards call a star, and it’s believed his signing has been the catalyst.
The player has always been talented and Tuttosport say Massimo Cellino saw this and took him off to Leeds United. Nineteen league goals in two season with Leeds is good work, and the Italian newspaper say he’s showed he’s better than a side finishing in the second half of the Championship.
That’s a little unfair on Leeds, they may have finished 13th last season but Garry Monk has them 4th now.
Leeds United now have Chris Wood firing them in at a rate Antenucci was unable to match, but behind the New Zealander there’s not much else and perhaps keeping Antenucci around wouldn’t have been a bad idea.
