Thursday’s edition of Marca has a big feature on Lucas Hernandez and interest from England towards the end of the Premier League transfer window.
The focus is on Manchester United, but the Spanish newspaper also states Manchester City and ‘other great’ English clubs made deadline attempts to tempt the Atletico Madrid player.
For City it doesn’t really make a lot of sense, unless they want an embarrassment of riches at left back.
In the France national team, Lucas is currently edged ahead of Benjamin Mendy. The battle is close and it would seem odd for Pep Guardiola’s club to pay Lucas’ €80m clause and replicate the tussle at club level.
Lucas can also play as a central defender, but it’s not where he’s really made his name or has been most impressive.
This may all be part of a Spanish attempt to talk up Lucas and his commitment to Atletico Madrid, with the club expected to push for a new contract and higher clause soon.
Throwing Manchester City into the mix makes the story more dramatic.
