Manchester United’s move for Cody Gakpo ‘failed’ to due to ‘financial rules’ meaning United could not spend the money to get him from PSV Eindhoven.
That’s according to Eindhovens Dagblad, relayed by FC Update, who cover the player’s tumultuous summer and surprise move to Liverpool in December, which has been turned into a three-part documentary in the Netherlands.
The newspaper explains that PSV haven’t quite forgotten about their former player just yet, despite the fact he departed for Liverpool nearly a year ago.
This has all been detailed in a new three-part documentary on the subject, which, interestingly, starts with a failed move to Manchester United in the summer of 2022.
ED explain that a move to Manchester United ‘seemed imminent’ after the player’s impressive performances in the Netherlands had been noted by Erik ten Hag.
United showed ‘extensive interest’ and a deal seemed to be progressing to a positive conclusion but it ultimately ‘failed’ as the Premier League side were unable to conclude a deal ‘due to financial rules’.
That was a ‘hard blow’ for Gakpo and his agent, Kees Ploegsma, who the newspaper say can be seen ‘visibly hurt’ while telling the forward that there will be no move to Manchester United after all.
It was all smiles later in the year, though, as he eventually moved to Liverpool, where he’s been impressing since and presumably leaving Manchester United disappointed, they couldn’t get that deal over the line before them.
