Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has known for ‘months’ that he will not be a part of Spain’s World Cup squad in Qatar.
That’s according to AS, who say the goalkeeper’s ‘brilliant’ performances for Manchester United have not served to change Luis Enrique’s plans.
They cover De Gea today after another impressive performance in United’s 1-0 win over West Ham on Sunday, with his display almost single-handedly ensuring all three points for Erik ten Hag’s side.
The clean sheet in the game was his third successive one at home and his fifth in the Premier League so far.
Those numbers raise questions about how he was missing from Spain’s 55-man preliminary squad for the World Cup. Most were surprised by that choice, but it seems De Gea was not.
AS report that the Manchester United goalkeeper ‘knew months before’ the pre-list was announced that he was not in Luis Enrique’s plans.
Even his ‘brilliant start’ for United this season has not helped to change the Spain manager’s plans, something which has baffled the set up at Old Trafford.
De Gea has a ‘great deal of support’ at the club and those supporters are now asking ‘what more can he do to go with the national team?’, according to the newspaper.
