With Edinson Cavani expected to leave Manchester United at the end of the season and Anthony Martial’s future at the club in serious doubt, a new striker is expected to arrive at Old Trafford this summer.
Erik ten Hag is set to overlook a huge turnover of players this summer under the watchful eye of current interim manager Ralf Rangnick, with a goalscorer among the priorities to take some of the load off a 37-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.
Many names have been touted, and yet one that hasn’t really appeared until now is that of Lautaro Martinez, currently at Inter.
The Argentina international has been a named target for Tottenham and Arsenal, yet not for Manchester United, but Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday change that.
They explain that four clubs (the three aforementioned Premier League sides and Atlético Madrid) ‘have sent signals’ to the player that they want to sign him, ‘albeit indirect ones’.
It’s been previously stated that Inter need some sales this summer to make up €60m or so, with Martinez the easiest help pull that off, but Gazzetta explain their preference, understandably, would be to do so without getting rid of their star.
This therefore puts Manchester United and other interested parties in a position where they will need flex their financial muscle to convince them to overlook their prime desire and simply accept the money on the table.
That is something the Red Devils tend to be good at if they really want a player, and we’ll now have to see how strong their desire really is.
Previous reports have stated that Inter value the Argentine somewhere between €70-80m, meaning he remains one of their most expensive assets to date.
