At this moment in time, on January 11th of the year 2023, Manchester United’s main focus appears to be getting Wout Weghorst through the door on loan.
That isn’t exactly what their fans were expecting, but following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the form Erik ten Hag has managed to put together, the process must be trusted.
Still, there are other areas of the pitch Manchester United will need to address down the line, whether it be this month or in the summer, and one of them is at right-back.
Diogo Dalot is the undisputed starter in that role, and an exit for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who hasn’t overly impressed Ten Hag, appears to be on the cards in the near future.
This means a new player will be needed to provide competition for the Portuguese, which is where Denzel Dumfries comes in.
The Dutchman has long been named as a target for Manchester United, and continues to be so on Wednesday, as Gazzetta dello Sport look at his situation.
They state the player is ‘already for sale now’, meaning January, and it’s well known his club, Inter, have to make a big sale before June 30th.
The defender remains their best option to get money, and their asking price ‘is high’, at €60m, while ‘the most interested Premier League big names, Chelsea and Manchester United, are thinking about next season’.
It’s then added that either of the two ‘could bring the operation forward to January’, but we doubt that will be the case for the Red Devils.
The fact they are going for Weghorst on a six month loan shows how reluctant they are to spend big midway through the season after a summer of splurging, so anything this big will have to wait until the season is over.
