When it comes to defenders in Sweden, few have as many expectations as Victor Lindelöf, partly because he is a Manchester United player.

Featuring for such a club, even if he is third-choice centre-back when everyone is fit, comes with a certain weight on your shoulders, and that’s why many are calling for him to step up.

One of those is journalist Stefan Thylin in an opinion piece for the official Sweden national team website, who urges the Manchester United player to be a ‘team that works as a team’.

The reliance on individual talents like Dejan Kulusevski and Alexander Isak has not worked to date, and he asks the question about the defence, recalling that Lindelöf has been guilty of making ‘glaring mistakes’ during the current Euro qualifiers.

Talking about the Manchester United player, he is calling for the centre-back to ‘step forward’ and ‘once again become the leader’ everyone knows he can be.

After all, he is the one who ‘will control the back line’, and while everyone loves a marauding ball playing defender playing that great through ball, Thylin points out that their main job ‘is to defend themselves and the team’.

That’s what Lindelöf needs to remember, and while he did play well against Arsenal for Manchester United before being forced to come off, he needs to show that with Sweden too.
