If Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is still not in perfect physical condition to play, why has he been called up for the Argentine national team?
Newspaper Olé has a pretty good story about the player’s situation, describing the important role he’s set to have for his country in this international break.
The national team is going through a new stage now.
They don’t have the likes of Javier Mascherano, Angel Di Maria, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero. Some retired and others are taking some time off.
So with so many faces in the squad, Argentina need a leader, and that’s why Sergio Romero’s return to the team was so needed.
Olé makes it clear that the goalkeeper may not play in the friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia, but he’ll be an important figure in the dressing room.
They say that Romero was received by a group of members from the staff and is much respected for all his history with the national team.
A person who knows Romero ‘since he was very young’ told Olé: “Sergio is fine, he has a medical discharge and will finish the final part of his recovery with us. We not only aim at his conditions as goalkeeper, but that he generates that commitment to the national team that he has so clear.”
Once he’s recovered, he will have the chance to fight for the starting spot to play the Copa America 2019, and be able to return to the Manchester United bench.
