On Wednesday, we covered a story from Argentine newspaper Olé explaining the important role Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is about to have in the national team.

With most of the stars being left out of the squad, Romero is one of the most experienced players in the camp. That’s why he’s been called up regardless of being unfit.

Now it’s newspaper Clarin who has a story about the goalkeeper, confirming that he’s unlikely to play the friendlies against Guatemala and Colombia.

Clarin claims that Romero should be called up again in October, when Argentina will be playing Brazil for the Superclásico de las Américas. That’s when they expect him to have a chance to play.

With the absence of Lionel Messi in the team, Romero was expected to be Argentina’s captain. But the goalkeeper’s injury will make the armbrand go to Nicolás Tagliafico.

Clarin asked people close to Lionel Scaloni if the manager will be calling up the likes of Angel Di Maria, Lionel Messi, Nicolas Otamendi and Sergio Aguero. “Maybe one or two, or none…” they were told.

That should make Romero an even more important figure for the team in the next few months.
