Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has been hailed as ‘an example’ for any footballer looking to make it in the professional game.
That’s according to his former manager Joop Gall, who had the striker at FC Emmen and is convinced he could play a role for ‘every English club’.
Weghorst is currently on loan at Manchester United from Burnley, having brought an end to a loan spell at Besiktas to make the move to Old Trafford.
United’s decision to move for the striker has been heavily questioned since it was made given the striker struggled for goals at Burnley last season after arriving in the January transfer window.
He has so far only managed one goal and one assist for Manchester United in 11 games but has made a positive impression despite that.
Indeed, there is a feeling his presence up front has had a positive effect upon those around him, with the Dutch striker proving to be a focal point for the likes of Marcus Rashford to play around and flourish.
Either way Weghorst is certainly doing a job for Erik ten Hag’s side and Gall insists he is good enough to play for anyone in England.
“Wout is an example, a very sweet and amiable guy who changes completely as soon as he steps on the field into someone who wants to win at all costs,” he told Voetbal Primeur.
“You want to let the opponents foam at the mouth, as long as they step out of themselves and therefore perform less. Wout is an example for every young footballer: never give up and look at Wout Weghorst.
“I picked up Ruben Schaken from Jong Cambuur and never thought he would make it to the Dutch national team. At most, middle of the Eredivisie and that also applied to Wout.
“He has developed incredibly well since then. I sometimes received questions about Wout from England and have often said that every English club can use a Wout Weghorst, whatever role they have for him. Erik ten Hag probably thought the same way.”
