On April 6th, we carried a report from Foot Mercato, who stated that Manchester United are ‘in the running’ to sign RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku.
These claims about the Red Devils looking at the versatile forward were backed up Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg last week.
A latest report from Bild states that ‘big clubs are interested’ in the 24-year-old and names Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain as his suitors.
The France international has starred for the Bundesliga side this season, managing 30 goals and 18 assists in all competitions. Bild name him as ‘Leipzig’s king of Europe’ as he has managed 10 goals and two assists from 10 European matches.
With Manchester United and two other clubs ‘interested’ in the attacker, the report says that Leipzig ‘do not want to let the striker go’. They want him to lead their attack next season.
In order to retain the ex-PSG man, the German club are working to extend his contract and also include a release clause of €60m, which will come into effect in 2023.
Leipzig are not set to appoint a new sporting director until the summer and the work that is supposed to be done by such a person is now shared between Oliver Mintzlaff, Christopher Vivell and Florian Scholz.
As it stands, Nkunku’s case is on Mintzlaff’s table and the latter shares a good relationship with the player’s agent, Pini Zahavi. Bild further explain the talks are ‘going well’ between the two parties.
With Manchester United, Bayern and PSG showing interest in the Frenchman, it remains to be seen whether Leipzig will be able to retain him and tie him down to a new contract or let him change clubs in the summer.
