Here we go again. A new season coming, and a new Portuguese youngster wanted by European giants.
This time it’s Gedson Fernandes who’s in the spotlight.
Newspaper O Jogo has a big story about the player today, saying he’s wanted by Roma, Manchester United and Juventus.
According to the article, Roma have recently shown availablity to pay up to €20m for the player, which was immediately turned down by the Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira.
This refusal also works as a ‘message’ to Manchester United and Juventus, saying the Eagles won’t negotiate the midfielder for less than that amount.
Fernandes is actually protected by a €60m release clause and a contract which runs until 2023, so the Portuguese giants are in a pretty good position to hold him.
The 19-year-old has appearances for all of Portugal’s youth levels, but is still to make his official debut for the Eagles’ first team.
Manchester United have been linked to a string of Benfica players, and signed Victor Lindelof from the club last summer.
Ahead of the winter window they were linked repeatedly with Umaro Embalo. The Premier League club often send scouts to watch not only Benfica’s first team but also their youth sections too, and have a good relationship with the Portuguese side.
