At the start of this month, El Chiringuito stated that Marco Asensio’s agent, Jorge Mendes, ‘wants to take’ the Real Madrid player to Manchester United.
The 26-year-old has 12 months left on his contract and it’s not clear whether he will sign a new deal, make a move elsewhere this summer or continue with the La Liga winners for one more season and then leave them as a free agent in 2023.
Asensio made it into Luis Enrique’s Spain squad for June’s international fixtures and prior to their 1-0 win over Switzerland on Thursday, he spoke to reporters about his future.
“Having more continuity, more confidence, is something that you have been able to hear from me lately. It’s something I want for years to come,” he said.
“I feel like in the end that’s important. This season I have had regularity and confidence for a good stretch of the season, but I am looking for that, not for a few months, but for the entire season.”
It’s claimed the Champions League winners have offered the attacking midfielder a new deal, but he hasn’t accepted it so far. If there is no change in Asensio’s stance, then Carlo Ancelotti’s side will make him available in the market this summer.
The player is aware he won’t be short of options to change clubs. The Spain international has offers from abroad, with Manchester United and Juventus ‘in the lead’ to sign him.
Manchester United are planning a new project under Erik ten Hag and Mundo add the Red Devils have set their sights on Asensio to bolster their squad next season.
He wants to have regular minutes in order to go to the Qatar World Cup with Spain.
However, Asensio is ready to risk everything and stay at Real Madrid for one more season, and leave them as a free agent in 2023.
