Manchester United have made a €55m bid for Fiorentina’s Federico Chiesa, but the Italian side are expecting a bigger offer sooner rather than later.
United have long been linked with Chiesa, who is widely regarded as one of the hottest talents in European football, never mind Italian.
There have been rumours about a potential move for the best part of two years or more, with the transfer window not passing without a link to Manchester United.
That has been the case this summer already, with a report last month stating they had already made a €50m bid to try and tempt him from Italy.
That was followed by a claim that it was Manchester United ‘above all’ pushing for Chiesa’s signature and that a move to England was a distinct possibility.
La Nazione report on the situation today and say that Chiesa’s future ‘remains to be defined’ this summer.
Fiorentina chief Rocco Commisso has made it clear that the club will sell for the ‘right’ money should it arrive and there are several options on the table.
Inter Milan and Juventus remain interested but ‘it is clear’ that Fiorentina would prefer to discuss a deal with the clubs in England, named as Newcastle and Manchester United.
The latter have already made an offer – which ‘remains’ on the table – of €55m, but Fiorentina are expecting a bigger bid to arrive in the coming weeks.
Whether that is from Manchester United remains to be seen, but it’s logical to assume any deal would be closely tied to what’s happening with Jadon Sancho.
If United can get that deal over the line, then there is very little chance they would be pursuing a €50m+ move for Chiesa, who plays in the same position.
The more likely answer is that Chiesa is an alternative to Sancho and, should that deal fail, they will come back to try and get Chiesa, hence Fiorentina believing that an improved bid will arrive in the coming weeks.
