It appears that Manchester United are stepping up their search for a new centre-back, and while they could go after a number of players outside of the Premier League, they are looking within the league to bolster their defence.
RMC Sport are the ones with the news, claiming that both the Red Devils and Chelsea are looking at Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana this summer.
The Foxes starlet, who is still only 21 years of age, missed the vast majority of last season with a fibula fracture, but returned in March to face Stade Rennais in the Conference League.
He then quickly returned to the Leicester City starting lineup, as Brendan Rodgers made it clear Fofana was a big part of his plans going forward.
However, without any European football next season, they could struggle to keep an ambitious player, especially with clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea ‘closely interested’ in the defender.
Regardless, signing the Leicester man would be complicated, since it would require a huge fee, which is why Chelsea are also looking at Jules Koundé, whose transfer is deemed ‘less complicated’.
As for Manchester United, they appear prepared to give Erik ten Hag what he wants, and it will be interesting to see how far that willingness goes.
That’s because Fofana is protected by a contract at King Power Stadium until 2027, and Leicester are ‘counting’ on him going forward.
This means there will need to be ‘at least €80m’ on the table, which would be a record sale for the Foxes, but it also might not be enough to put off spend happy clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea.
One to keep an eye on.
