In recent years, Manchester United have worked through a number of options in central defence, at times having change choices due to injury and at others due to form or managerial preference.

Now it’s claimed that one of the options the Red Devils looked to bring in was Alessandro Bastoni.

TMW report today that there was a point in the summer of 2021 when Bastoni could have left the Nerazzurri. That was when the club’s Suning ownership was struggling financially and they needed money from sales.

They managed to secure a monetary loan from Oaktree but before that, Manchester United were interested in Bastoni and  ‘ready to understand’ his situation further.

There was a ‘risk’ of his exit but the player ‘always asked to stay’, leading to the sales of Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi.

He later signed a new deal that kept him at the club till 2024 before penning another long-term extension.

It is the sort of transfer which could have elevated United’s backline, considering how Bastoni is one of the best centre-backs in Europe right now.
