Micky van de Ven has regularly impressed for Tottenham Hotspur since joining them from VfL Wolfsburg in August 2023.
The defender has been the first choice for Ange Postecoglou when available for selection. He made 36 appearances for Spurs, of which seven are from this season.
Tottenham wouldn’t have been able to secure his services if Barcelona had decided to bet on him in the past.
According to Cadena Ser’s Carrusel Deportivo, the La Liga side came ‘close to signing’ the 23-year-old. This information has been shared by the Catalan club’s former scout, Bojan Krkić Sr.
“He was faster than Mbappé. I called them and insisted on Barcelona, because we had him for €3.5m. It was not executed in the end…” he said,
It’s not made clear as to when Barca came close to securing the centre-back’s services and why the deal didn’t go through.
Van de Ven joined the Bundesliga side in 2021. Krkić Sr. had two spells with the Spanish club and the second one was between 2017 and 2020. This indicates the former scout had recommended the Netherlands international to Barca when he was at FC Volendam.
Taking the Dutchman’s performances for Tottenham into account, Barcelona could now be regretting to have missed out him for €3.5m.
