With all the stories suggesting that Manchester United are going after Kim Min-jae, it appears that Erik ten Hag wants a new centre-back at Old Trafford.
However, that’s not the only area that will need bolstering, with a new right-back on the agenda, and that’s why it makes sense for the Red Devils to target a player who can play in both roles.
That man is Barcelona’s Jules Koundé, with it stated by AS on Friday that Manchester United have made the first move in an attempt to bring him to Old Trafford.
The newspaper look at the player’s situation following him taking to Twitter and claiming he wasn’t going anywhere, and they don’t necessarily believe him.
That’s because he’s not necessarily indispensable to Xavi, especially since Koundé has mostly been used at right-back, despite him preferring to play through the middle.
Furthermore, when he has played in the role he wants, he hasn’t outperformed the likes of Araújo or Andreas Christensen.
Therefore, Xavi ‘isn’t in a position to guarantee’ that Koundé will start ahead of the other two centre-backs, and it’s made clear that ‘in recent days’, a few Premier League clubs have come snooping.
Manchester United are one of them, and they ‘have asked’ about the Frenchman, which has not gone unnoticed in Barcelona.
After all, the La Liga giants need money, and they know that by selling Koundé, they could find themselves a proper right-back, which was a scenario they weren’t considering until now.
Therefore, him going to Manchester United, or another Premier League club, would not be ‘dramatic’, and, in fact, could be a great solution for Barcelona.
