On February 8th, AS stated Manchester City have started talks to renew Erling Haaland’s contract. It was also reported he’s dithering over a long-term commitment and is waiting to see the developments around Kylian Mbappé’s future.
On Thursday, Paris Saint-Germain confirmed Mbappé has decided to leave when his deal expires at the end of this season.
Following this, Friday’s AS states the Manchester City star is a ‘collateral victim’ of the Frenchman’s latest decision.
Real Madrid are said to be interested in the duo, and Haaland had hopes of joining them in 2025. This option was considered both by him and his entourage, who has already been approached by the La Liga side to know about his release clause.
AS state Los Blancos will be Mbappé’s next destination and this makes it difficult for the 23-year-old Norway international to join them in the near future. At the same time, this will please Manchester City in their efforts to extend his contract.
Haaland’s agent Rafaela Pimenta had postponed talks when Pep Guardiola’s side wanted to discuss the renewal, but it’s claimed the latest development around Mbappé gives Manchester City ‘free rein’, and they will now ‘push to renew’ Haaland’s contract ‘as soon as possible’.
However, the report says Pimenta would leave a door open for Haaland to leave Manchester City if he were to sign an extension.
Therefore, a move to Real Madrid in the future isn’t completely ruled out, perhaps with some sort of new clause integrated it within a renewal.
