England have made it to the final of the U17 World Cup, continuing a brilliant period for the country’s age-restricted teams.
Talk of problems in English football at grassroots is being weakened with each successful tournament, as are claims there’s a shortage of talent in the country.
The ability is there, the problem is transferring that to a super competitive Premier League, and with few players choosing to go overseas, because the money is usually far better in England, it creates a progression issue.
One player who has left England is Jadon Sancho, who was recalled by Borussia Dortmund after playing just one match in the tournament. Making his Dortmund debut at the weekend, Sancho will argue that’s exactly why he left Manchester City.
As one of 5 pages previewing the final of the tournament, Spanish newspaper AS have a look at the English squad, and have a very special mention for the former Manchester City player.
AS state ‘Some say he’ll be the next €150m player’ and whilst we haven’t heard that, it’s a way to frame how Sancho is seen, of course by ‘some’.
Manchester City may be left ruing the youngster’s exit, but AS also have some caveats to the player’s potential success, saying there’s doubts Sancho has the ’emotional stability and intelligence’ to progress to the top.
