Manchester City have been looking at Villarreal star Pau Torres for a ‘long time’, report Marca.
The Citizens know ‘everything’ about the defender and even made ‘direct contact’ with his environment in the summer.
Tottenham Hotspur submitted a bid, but the 24-year-old rejected the opportunity to join Spurs. There were several reasons and among them was his decision to continue with the La Liga side.
‘There is also something else’, says Marca, and follow it up by stating Pep Guardiola’s side have long been monitoring the centre-back. His performances from last season saw City sporting director Txiki Begiristain make sure he was ‘very well positioned’ to have Torres on his agenda.
Begiristain has been receiving first-hand information from people close to Unai Emery’s man, both on a professional and personal level. The question, however, remains whether Manchester City will launch an effort to sign the player in the coming months.
For now, Torres’ decision is to continue with the Yellow Submarine until the end of this season. His desire is to compete at the highest level, both in the league and the Champions League.
Marca say: ‘It is the season of his total integration to the highest elite, and who knows… the definitive push to make the leap to the Premier League.’
The report adds any possible move from City for Torres could depend on Benjamin Mendy [currently suspended] and Aymeric Laporte’s situations.
Begiristain and City have a detailed report about the Villarreal player and know everything about him. It remains to be seen whether the Etihad club will convert this into a concrete offer in the coming windows.
