Amid the numerous rumours, you’re likely to read about Manchester City this summer, David Alaba’s name will be a constant theme.
With City looking for a left-back, him in the final year of his deal at the Allianz Arena and his relationship with Pep Guardiola, a move makes sense on several levels.
Indeed, the rumours are already plentiful that Manchester City will be making a move as they look set to spend £150m this summer after dodging a European ban courtesy of CAS.
Bild cover the situation today and explain that Alaba and Guardiola have a good relationship after the Spaniard’s time in charge at the German club.
Alaba was a regular under his leadership and rose rapidly in value as a result, so if Guardiola does want to strengthen his defence, moving for Alaba would be wise.
However, if the evidence is anything to go by, that interest just isn’t there. Why? Because City have already been offered him but looked elsewhere.
Bild claim that during the recent talks over Leroy Sané, Alaba’s management ‘proposed’ that he be exchanged for the German international.
City responded that they would indeed be open to a trade, but only if they were getting Kingsley Coman, not Alaba.
In other words, the Austria international was not the ‘top priority’ at the Etihad.
The truth of the matter is that Alaba’s contract expires next summer and so far the talks about an extension are yet to yield any results.
There is, however, ‘no serious interest’ from other clubs, notably Manchester City, in signing him this summer.
Of course, that may change in the coming weeks, although any interested party will have to deal with Alaba’s wage demands, with it felt he would ask for €20m a year, a rise of his current €15m a year salary.
